Jimmy Smith Trio – March 1964, Paris, France
Jimmy Smith needs no introduction. He was at the forefront of classic jazz organ playing of the 60s, a funky, bluesy sound heavily influenced by gospel and the blues. Here on this rare tape from 31 March 1964, we find him playing live before an appreciative Paris audience at the Olympia Theater in a trio setting with Quentin Warren on guitar and William Hart on drums. The music is just what you would expect, down-home organ jazz. The sound is quite good with the organ very present and centered, obvious from the opening note of The Sermon (first tune on the tape). And most importantly, the recording done by French Radio communicates the musical intent. The tape contains 33 minutes of music-- three somewhat lengthy excursions, "The Sermon,” " Sunnymoorn For Two," and "Walk On The Wild Side." The tape is available as a production copy only as the master must be preserved. This is a rare tape of great musicians few will ever hear.
