Ted Hogarth Clarinet Quartet, March 2024 – Chicago, Illinois

Ted Hogarth has all the credentials of a true professional musician.  To quote his website: “Chicago, his home for 20 years, Ted quickly established himself as the first-call baritone saxophonist and woodwind doubler for local and internationally touring jazz groups. Because of his skills as a woodwind doubler, Ted has played in many Broadway musicals, such as Jersey Boys and Dream Girls, including five years on the national tour of Jersey Boys and one year on the national tour of A Bronx Tale.” And it goes on.  Here we find Ted on both clarinet and bass clarinet. Ted can play, and the tonal quality and texture he adds to this session is beguiling.  The choice of songs doesn’t hurt either: “Danny Boy”, “Old Man River”, “Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most” and so on.  Ted is joined by veteran Chicago musicians Kyle Asche on guitar, Joe Policastro on acoustic bass, and Todd Howell on drums.  The sound quality matches the musicianship making for a stunning session. Heard on a direct tape copy of the 8-track master, it doesn’t get much better.
