Where technology meets art
The Joe Policastro Trio Featuring Mark Feldman — October 2022 Chicago, Illinois
The marriage of jazz with classical music has a long tradition. It is sometimes referred to as Third Stream Music and was popularized by the Modern Jazz Quartet with their integration of jazz with traditional chamber music. In this performance, we have the well-known and brilliant violinist Mark Feldman, joining guitarist Dave Miller, bassist Joe Policastro, and drummer Gustavo Cortinas, in a unique melding of jazz and classical music. One can find here both the beauty and stateliness of classical music and the spontaneity of jazz represented on this tape by “Beethoven’s 7th Symphony in A major, 2nd movement, Allegretto” and the aria, “Dido’s Lament” from the opera Dido and Aneneas by Henry Purcell. The music is formal and gorgeous yet delightfully infused with an improvisational and jazz instrumental element. Combine this with the startling sonic quality and the result is a singular session of uncanny beauty and impact. The session was recorded at Pro Musica Chicago using AKG 414 microphones, directly to a custom Studer/Revox 8-track tape recorder through a Grace 8-channel preamp. Engineering by Jonathan Horwich and Ken Christianson. This performance is one of the highest representations of fine analog sound IPI has produced.
